NRPA congratulates and commends new and outgoing editors
The National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) is proud to announce the appointment of a new editor for its academic journal, Journal of Leisure Research (JLR). The Journal of Leisure Research (JLR), published in partnership with the Taylor & Francis Group, is an international scholarly peer reviewed journal that supports park and recreation and leisure studies.
Kindal Shores is a Professor at East Carolina University in the Department of Recreation Sciences where she serves also serves as the undergraduate program director in Recreation and Park Management. Dr. Shores earned her Ph.D. in Recreation and Park Administration at Texas A&M University (2005). Dr. Shores’ scholarly work pursues two lines of inquiry - she investigates the contribution of community parks and recreation to healthy, active living, and writes on the relationship of time use, time perception and leisure. Dr. Shores enjoys teaching, and mentors both undergraduate and graduate students. She first began working on the Journal of Leisure Research as a graduate assistant under then Editor in Chief, Dr. David Scott in 2001-2005, and has served as an associate editor with JLR for 12 years as well.
Paul Heintzman, Ph.D., professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences and affiliated professor with the Institute of the Environment, University of Ottawa, had served as the Editor in Chief of JLR since 2020.
“We thank outgoing editor Dr. Heintzman for his thought leadership and countless contributions to JLR,” said Kevin Roth, NRPA vice president of research, evaluation and technology. “We are grateful for his expertise, time and devotion to support park and recreation and leisure studies.”
Roth continued, “We welcome incoming editor Kindal Shores to her leadership role with the journal - we’re excited to have her leading JLR into the future and look forward to watching our new editor build on the momentum of their respected predecessors’ accomplishments. We also thank East Carolina University for supporting Dr. Shores on this endeavor.”
Established in 1968, JLR publishes original research to advance the field of leisure studies. The journal, which is published five times a year, is scientific in nature and focuses on conceptual and methodological advances and questions.
