Ashburn, Va. (August 13, 2020) — The National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) is proud to announce the appointment of new editors for each of its academic journals, Journal of Leisure Research (JLR) and SCHOLE: A Journal of Leisure Studies & Recreation Education. Published and distributed by Taylor & Francis Group, NRPA’s peer-reviewed journals support park and recreation and leisure studies.

Paul Heintzman, Ph.D., professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences and affiliated professor with the Institute of the Environment, University of Ottawa, will begin as the new Editor in Chief of JLR on September 1. He follows Laura Payne, who steps down from the position on August 30. Professor Heintzman received his Ph.D. from the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies, University of Waterloo. His extensive work and continuing research interests have focused on multiple aspects of recreation and the environment.

Joey Gray, Ph.D., professor of Leisure and Sport Management at Middle Tennessee State University, began as Editor in Chief of SCHOLE on July 15, following John Pommier’s years of service in the position. Professor Gray received her Ph.D. in Leisure Behavior from Indiana University. Her distinguished professional career includes the position of associate editor at SCHOLE from 2008–2013.

“We welcome incoming editors Paul Heintzman and Joey Gray to their leadership roles with the journals,” said Kevin Roth, Vice President of Research, Evaluation & Technology at NRPA. “We’re excited to have these two distinguished academics leading JLR and SCHOLE into the future and helping to extend their international outreach.”

Roth continued, “We thank the outgoing editors Drs. Payne and Pommier for their outstanding service and excellent contributions. We look forward to watching our new editors build on the momentum of their esteemed predecessors’ accomplishments.”

Established in 1968, JLR publishes original research to advance the field of leisure studies. The journal, which is published five times a year, is scientific in nature and focuses on conceptual and methodological advances and questions.

SCHOLE aims to disseminate knowledge related to park and recreation courses, curricula and teaching. The journal’s articles address a wide range of issues concerning graduate and undergraduate education.
